A new version of the Linux Mint 21.3 distribution has been quietly released under the name 'Virginia' (or Virgina for old-school enthusiasts) \u2014 likely the most user-friendly and 'polished' version currently available. Key improvements highlighted by the developers include enhanced compatibility with Secure Boot and various versions of BIOS and UEFI.<\/p>\n

In addition, several applications have been improved (hypnotix, for example, has integrated with yt-dlp), the development of the Cinnamon desktop environment continues (new types of 'spices,' as they call the extension modules, have been introduced, and work has begun on integration with Wayland), but the main benefit has been, of course, the firm's collection of high-quality wallpapers.<\/p>\n

The release is based on Ubuntu 22.04 and is long-term supported (LTS, until 2027); however, there is also ongoing work to align the features of the main Linux Mint with its Debian version (LMDE), and the developers claim that much has been done in this direction with 21.3, although the LMDE update will occur somewhat later. The goal is to achieve feature parity between both versions, thereby ensuring that Linux Mint has a complete 'Plan B' in case it cannot continue to be based on Ubuntu. Additionally, LMDE still allows the installation of the distribution on 32-bit systems, which mainstream Mint lost with Ubuntu's decision to discontinue support for 32-bit builds.<\/p>\n

The release is available in the traditional three variants (with Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce by default). In line with tradition, Snap has been excluded from Linux Mint, and some key packages that underwent mandatory snapification in Ubuntu (like Chromium) have been reverted to the debian format.<\/p>\n

Users of previous versions in the 21 series can upgrade through the standard mechanisms.<\/p>\n
