The UBports project, which took over the development of the mobile platform Ubuntu Touch after Canonical stepped away, has announced a shift to a new model for release formation. Instead of releases designated as 'OTA-number branch_name', new versions of the Ubuntu Touch firmware will now be released using the scheme 'year.month.update', where the year and month correspond to the time of a significant release based on a new Ubuntu branch. The update number corresponds to an interim release that includes only fixes and minor improvements. Significant releases are planned to be published every six months, while interim updates will occur every two months. <\/p>\n
The new scheme will be implemented after the project is upgraded to the Ubuntu 24.04 package base. The first version of Ubuntu Touch based on Ubuntu 24.04 is planned to be released in June and assigned the number 24.6.0. Corrective updates will be numbered 24.6.1, 24.6.2, and so on. In six months, around December 2024, the Ubuntu Touch 24.12.0 release will be formed, which will offer new features and changes from Ubuntu 24.10. Support for each major version will cease one month after the formation of a new major version. <\/p>\n
Since the transition from the current branch based on Ubuntu 20.04 to the Ubuntu 24.04 package base requires substantial work and additional stabilization, the Ubuntu Touch Focal branch is planned to be supported in parallel with the new Ubuntu Touch 24.6 branch for some time. In particular, updates Ubuntu Touch OTA-5 Focal, OTA-6 Focal, etc., are planned until the new branch is fully stabilized.
