Developers of the Chromium project have announced plans to implement support for Web Monetization technology in the browser, allowing site owners to automatically receive micropayments for viewing their content. The technology is expected to be used for monetizing websites instead of displaying ads, serving as a form of online tips or providing selective paid access to content without requiring a subscription. The first prototype of the Web Monetization implementation is planned to be included in Chrom\u0435 127, scheduled for release on July 23. <\/p>\n

Through the Web Monetization API, web pages can inform the browser about accepting payments in a passive mode that does not require prompting for payment. This technology is convenient for users as it does not distract them during their activities, allows payments solely for the content viewed, and does not adhere to a minimum payment amount (i.e., instead of a total subscription that cannot be less than a certain amount, usually 2-5 dollars, access can be paid granularly with microscopic amounts not supported by typical processing systems). <\/p>\n

For example, websites using Web Monetization can grant access to all paid content immediately after the user agrees to the terms, without requiring prepayment. After the user watches, for instance, a paid video, the browser will automatically initiate a payment microtransaction without distracting the user. Another use case for Web Monetization is organizing voluntary donations for valuable content \u2014 if a user wishes to support certain websites, they can set up automatic small payments to the site owner with each visit. <\/p>\n

In the simplest case, to enable Web Monetization on a website, one only needs to add a 'link' element with the 'rel=\"monetization\"' attribute and point to their wallet link for receiving transfers. The user just needs to configure their wallet for that website, after which the browser will automatically start making the transfers designated by the user. Web Monetization does not allow the site to set an amount for payments; it only provides the ability to declare a willingness to accept payments. The amount of payment, the frequency of payments, and the ability to pay a specific website is determined by the user. <\/p>\n

With Web Monetization, any wallets compatible with the Open Payments API can be used (supported by wallets from various financial services like Gatehub and Fynbos). Micropayments utilize the Interledger Protocol (ILP). Access to the wallet is provided through the GNAP (Grant Negotiation and Authorization Protocol), enabling the wallet owner to precisely manage the permissions granted to applications working with the wallet.
