The developers of the LXQt (Qt Lightweight Desktop Environment) have shared insights on the transition to using the Qt6 library and the Wayland protocol. The migration of all components of LXQt to Qt6 is currently considered a primary task, receiving the project's full attention. After the migration is completed, support for Qt5 will be discontinued.

The results of the porting to Qt6 will be presented in the release of LXQt 2.0.0, scheduled for April this year. In addition to internal changes, the new branch will by default offer a new application menu \"Fancy Menu\", which not only categorizes applications but also includes a summary view of all applications and a list of frequently used applications. Moreover, the new menu enhances the search capabilities for programs.

It is noteworthy that the implementation of Wayland support will not lead to conceptual changes: the project will remain modular and will continue to adhere to the classic desktop organization. Similar to support for various window managers, LXQt will be able to work with all composite managers based on the wlroots library, developed by the developers of the Sway environment, which provides basic functions for organizing the work of a Wayland-based composite manager. The operation of LXQt using Wayland has been tested with the composite managers labwc, wayfire, kwin_wayland, sway, and Hyprland. The best results were achieved when using labwc. <\/p>\n

Currently, the panel, desktop, file manager (PCmanFM-qt), image viewer (LXimage-qt), authorization management system (PolicyKit), volume control component (pavucontrol, PulseAudio Volume Control), and global hotkey handler have all been fully migrated to Qt6. The session manager, notification system, power management mechanism, configurator (for managing appearance, screen, input devices, locales, and file associations), interface for viewing running processes (Qps), terminal emulator (QTerminal), screenshot tool (Screengrab), utility for launching programs (Runner), wrapper for sudo, SSH password request interface (LXQt Openssh Askpass), FreeDesktop portal system (XDG Desktop Portal), and interface for managing system settings and users (LXQt Admin) have not yet been ported to Qt6. <\/p>\n

Regarding readiness for operation using the Wayland protocol, most of the aforementioned LXQt components have already been ported to Wayland to varying degrees. Support for Wayland is currently lacking only in the screen configurator, screenshot tool, and global keyboard shortcut handler. There are no plans to port the sudo wrapper to Wayland.
