Security researchers from Apiiro have identified the activity of criminals posting modified clones of various project repositories on GitHub, which contain small changes aimed at carrying out malicious actions. Typically, a malicious repository is created with the same name but attached to a different organization («github.org\/org1\/proj» -> «github.org\/org2\/proj») or with a slightly altered name (typosquatting), assuming that the victim will not notice the difference and will use the code with the malicious changes. To lure users, links to these malicious repositories are actively shared across various social networks, forums, and chats. <\/p>\n
Reports indicate the discovery of over 100,000 such repositories, but researchers believe the total number of repositories with malicious changes could reach millions, as the vast majority of automatically created repositories are deleted by GitHub within a few hours of being posted.
