Linus Torvalds has approved the request to remove the old NTFS filesystem driver from the Linux kernel. Starting with version 5.15, a new NTFS3 driver, developed and maintained by Paragon Software, has been included in the kernel. Including two drivers for NTFS in the kernel is unnecessary since the old driver has not been updated for many years, is in poor condition, and can only operate in read-only mode. <\/p>\n
The new NTFS3 driver supports write mode and all features of the current version NTFS 3.1, including extended file attributes, access control lists (ACL), data compression mode, efficient handling of sparse files, and replaying changes from the log to maintain integrity after failures. The removal of the old driver should not affect distributions, as, for example, Debian does not compile or use NTFS drivers from the kernel but offers users the ntfs-3g implementation that operates in user space.
