Redis Ltd has announced a change in the licensing for the Redis database management system, which falls under the NoSQL category. Starting with the release of Redis 7.4, the project code will be distributed under two proprietary licenses: RSALv2 (Redis Source Available License v2) and SSPLv1 (Server Side Public License v1), instead of the previously applied BSD license. Previously, only the code for additional modules, which offered enhanced capabilities for enterprise users (such as RediSearch, RedisGraph, RedisJSON, RedisML, RedisBloom, etc.), was provided under a proprietary license. From now on, the proprietary license will also apply to the main code base of the database management system. <\/p>\n
The change in licensing will allow for the integration of proprietary modules with the implementation of extended data types and processing engines into the core of future versions of the Redis database management system, which were previously only offered as part of the Redis Stack product. Old releases will remain available under the previous BSD license and can serve as the basis for creating independent forks. <\/p>\n
Support for old branches of Redis 7.x, released prior to the license change, will continue for at least until the release of Redis Community Edition 9.0. All patches fixing vulnerabilities and major issues will be released for the old branches under the BSD license and can be used in forks. After the end of support for the old branches, patches will be released only under the SSPL and RSAL licenses, meaning that from then on, fork authors will need to manage their own support. <\/p>\n
The SSPL and RSAL licenses are not open and impose additional restrictions that prohibit free use of the product for providing cloud services. Both licenses share similar goals, with the main difference being that the SSPL license is based on the copyleft AGPLv3 license, while the RSAL license is based on the permissive BSD license. <\/p>\n
The RSAL license allows the use, modification, distribution, and integration of code into applications, except when these applications are commercial or used to provide managed paid services (free use is permitted for internal services, and the limitation only applies to paid services providing access to Redis). In accordance with copyleft principles, the SSPL license includes a requirement to supply not only the code of the application itself but also the source texts of all components involved in providing the cloud service under the same license. <\/p>\n
The reason for changing the licensing policy is to prevent cloud service providers from benefiting unfairly from open source software. Redis Inc is dissatisfied that cloud providers create derivative commercial products and resell Redis as cloud services, but do not participate in community life or support development. This creates a situation where unrelated cloud providers benefit by reselling ready-made open solutions, while the developers receive nothing. <\/p>\n
Both licenses lead to the discrimination of specific user categories, which does not allow them to be considered open or free. The OSI (Open Source Initiative) has stated that such licenses are not open and products based on them should be considered proprietary. Among other things, products under the SSPL and RSAL licenses cannot be included in free distributions such as Fedora and Debian.
