Release 1.5.0 of the Vitastor data storage software system has been published, featuring support for a cluster file system (VitastorFS). Vitastor \u2014 a distributed block software storage system, designed as a repository for virtual machine images or container disks, developed by the author since 2019. Starting from version 1.5.0, it also serves as a cluster file system. VitastorFS is mounted via the NFS 3.0 protocol from a locally or remotely running server(s). <\/p>\n
Vitastor primarily targets SSD and SSD+HDD clusters (though it also functions in configurations with only hard disks) with at least a 10 Gb\/s network, supports TCP and RDMA, and on good hardware can achieve read and write latency of ~0.1 ms for 4KB, which is approximately ten times faster than most popular SDS solutions and the internal SDS of major cloud providers \u2014 both Ceph and typical cloud SDS give write latency of 1-2 ms even on very fast disks. <\/p>\n
For example, in a recent test with Samsung PM9A3 NVMe disks and Mellanox ConnectX-4 network cards with RDMA, the ideal write latency was > 0.1 ms when using replication and 0.1 ms for reading \/ 0.2 ms for writing when using error correction codes. <\/p>\n
Vitastor supports QEMU driver, NBD and NFS protocols, Proxmox drivers, Kubernetes CSI, OpenStack. Additionally, an experimental Kubernetes operator and a Prometheus exporter are available for Vitastor. <\/p>\n
The server components of Vitastor are distributed under the exclusive 'network copyleft' license VNPL (Vitastor Network Public License). The idea behind VNPL is to extend the reach of copyleft not only to modules explicitly tied to the code, but also to services interacting with Vitastor over the network, specifically created for it (for example, any bindings for internal use in a commercial cloud).
