The release of the composite server Niri 0.1.5 has been published, developed under the influence of the GNOME extension PaperWM. It implements a tiling layout method, where windows are grouped into an infinitely scrollable band on the screen. Opening a new window expands the band, while previously added windows never change size. The project's code is distributed under the GPLv3 license. Packages are built for Fedora, NixOS, Arch Linux, and FreeBSD. <\/p>\n

The reason for creating a separate composite manager is the inability to implement separate monitor work in PaperWM due to the binding to global window coordinates in the GNOME Shell. A fundamental difference between Niri and PaperWM is the binding of its own window band to each monitor, which do not intersect with each other. Niri supports HiDPI and can operate on systems with multiple GPUs (for example, hybrid systems with a discrete video card and an integrated GPU). <\/p>\n

As in GNOME, virtual workspaces in Niri are created dynamically and arranged vertically (the window strip rotates horizontally, while the workspace strip is vertical). Configuration is done through a configuration file, allowing modification of basic environment parameters such as border width, margins, output modes, and window sizes. Changes made to the configuration file are applied automatically without restarting the composite server. Gesture control via the touchpad is supported. Configuration changes take effect on the fly without restarting the composite server. <\/p>\n

The new version is notable for its implementation of new animated effects during window manipulation, as well as the introduction of spring animation effects. Animation is now applied when moving, resizing, and closing windows. For those who find animated effects distracting, a configuration parameter is available to disable animation or customize each effect to their preferences.
