Benjamin Summerton, the author of the PSRayTracing ray tracing system, analyzed the impact of using the keyword «final» in C++ code, introduced in the C++11 standard, on application performance. The testing was prompted by claims circulating online that using «final» can boost performance, which were based on subjective assessments without providing results of any changes. <\/p>\n

Benjamin's testing revealed that the performance impact of using «final» greatly depends on the compiler. When compiled with GCC, performance noticeably increased in many cases, but when compiled with Clang and MSVC, performance generally decreased, often significantly. Additionally, the platform had a considerable influence; for instance, performance drops were more pronounced on the system with an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX CPU compared to a system with an Apple M1 CPU.

For example, on an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX system with Ubuntu 23.10, compiling with Clang resulted in a slowdown of at least 5% in 90% of tests when using «final», while in 2.5% of cases, there was at least a 5% speedup. With GCC, a 5% slowdown was recorded in 0.9% of cases, and a 5% speedup occurred in 15.8% of the tests. In MSVC, a 5% slowdown was observed in 26.2% of tests, with a 5% speedup in 13.3%. The author of the study concluded that it is necessary to avoid using «final».
