Eelco Dolstra, the author of the Nix package manager, has announced his decision to step down as head of the governing board of the nonprofit organization NixOS Foundation, which supports the infrastructure, manages financial flows, and addresses legal matters concerning the NixOS project. The decision follows the publication of a collective open letter criticizing Eelco's actions and expressing concerns for the future of Nix and NixOS. The letter was initially published by anonymous authors, but after it was posted, 160 individuals signed it. <\/p>\n
The open letter mentions a leadership crisis in the project and the current management's inability to adequately respond to community issues, resulting in these problems remaining unresolved for many years. Specifically, it points out management's failure to formulate and uphold the values that the community should adhere to, as well as to hold participants accountable for inappropriate behavior. According to the authors of the open letter, a toxic culture has developed in the community, and the leadership of the NixOS Foundation is inactive in eradicating it. <\/p>\n

Elko Dolstra is accused of exerting pressure on other members of the managing board and on the team developing the project in order to overturn certain decisions. For example, after consensus was reached regarding the community's ability to veto conference sponsors at NixCon, Elko Dolstra, being the only dissenting voice, initiated a re-examination of this issue (community activists attempted to prevent the participation of the company Anduril, which uses NixOS, due to its military contracts). Instances of abusing the existing power to overturn decisions that should be made collectively also include Dolstra's refusals to grant code review rights to long-time contributors and blocking changes to the build system that were agreed upon in the RFC. It is also mentioned that due to the unregulated power, the moderation team feels powerless and fears that its authority may be undermined by Elko Dolstra's actions. <\/p>\n
After reviewing the open letter, the NixOS Foundation board announced a meeting to be held within 14 days, during which a new governance structure will be formed, subordinate to the community and aimed at meeting the community's needs. After the establishment of the new governing body, the current board members, which include Elko and three other participants, will transfer their powers to the new structure. The governance transformation process for the project will take place publicly, and every participant will be able to oversee it. <\/p>\n
The board's statement acknowledges that project management is struggling to adapt to the changes and growth of the community. While the board was primarily established to address financial, legal, and administrative issues, many viewed it as a governing body for the community. In response, the board took on the role of an arbitrator to resolve conflicts but was unprepared to handle the crises arising in the community due to communication, moderation, and decision-making authority issues.
