This week, as reported by The Stack, the first hearing took place in the High Court of the United Kingdom regarding the lawsuit by IBM UK, which accused the Swiss company LzLabs of using its British subsidiary Winsopia to purchase IBM software for mainframes with the intent of reverse engineering and developing a Software Defined Mainframe (SDM) platform. According to IBM, the SDM platform, essentially an emulator, enables customers to run IBM mainframe applications on x86 servers running Linux, including cloud environments, without the need to modify the source code or recompile. IBM claims in its lawsuit that LzLabs breached the terms of the licensing agreement that prohibits reverse engineering of software products. The lawsuit was filed in the High Court back in September 2021 and has since undergone several amendments. IBM is seeking damages, a declaration that the methods employed in developing SDM are unlawful, and an injunction against the sale of SDM.
