Google has released the second beta version of the open mobile platform Android 15. The official release of Android 15 is expected in the third quarter of 2024. To evaluate the new capabilities of the platform, a beta testing program has been proposed. Firmware builds have been prepared for the Pixel 6\/6a\/6 Pro, Pixel 7\/7a\/7 Pro, Pixel 8\/8 Pro, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet, as well as for some smartphones and tablets from companies such as Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Nothing, OnePlus, OPPO, Realme, Sharp, Tecno, vivo, and Xiaomi. <\/p>\n

Expanded capabilities for multitasking on large-screen devices. The support for adding a taskbar to the screen for quick switching between apps and pinning shortcuts to frequently used programs has been implemented.

A separate private section with applications has been added, appearing only after additional user authentication. In fact, applications in this section are stored in a separate profile, paused when access to the apps is not unlocked (i.e., apps from this profile are active only when the profile is unlocked). When viewing the list of applications, the contents of the private section are displayed in a separate block. Notifications and settings related to private apps are hidden when blocked, and files created and downloaded using these apps are separated from files in the main profile (access to private content from apps in the main profile is achieved through file sharing and image access interfaces).

Support for displaying personalized thumbnails has been provided. Applications can offer widgets relevant thumbnails for the user, instead of the default placeholders.

By default, system-level visualization is activated for navigation using screen gestures, with animations warning the user of upcoming actions, for instance, sliding left shows that the application will be minimized and the home screen will be displayed.

Based on the ANGLE layer, an implementation of OpenGL ES has been developed that operates over the Vulkan graphics API, which is designated as the preferred interface for GPU interaction. Utilizing the ANGLE layer for OpenGL applications enhances compatibility and, in some situations, improves performance. An option to 'Enable ANGLE' has been added in the 'Developer options\/Experimental' settings section. In 2025, the OpenGL ES implementation based on ANGLE is expected to be enabled by default, and in 2026, it will be the only supported version.\n
Support for the dav1d library has been provided for software decoding of AV1 video format on devices without hardware acceleration support. The library is developed by participants of the VideoLAN and FFmpeg projects and aims to achieve the highest possible decoding performance while ensuring quality operation in multithreaded mode. In conducted tests, dav1d outperforms the previously used software decoder by three times. The library is currently available as an option but will be offered by default in one of the upcoming updates.\n
The graphics subsystem now supports the Matrix44 class for coordinate transformation using a 4x4 matrix when manipulating 2D surfaces in 3D space. A clipShader function has also been added for applying a clip with the specified shader.\n
The operation of the background services mechanism has been optimized, allowing applications to remain active when not interacted with by the user. Background services performing data synchronization (dataSync) or multimedia content processing (mediaProcessing) will now be forcibly stopped after running for 6 hours.\n
Support has been added for devices that use 16 KB memory pages. To utilize 16 KB pages, it is sufficient to simply recompile applications that directly or indirectly use NDK (Native Development Kit) libraries. Utilizing 16 KB pages instead of 4 KB can enhance the performance of memory-intensive applications. For instance, the launch time of such applications has decreased on average by 3.16% (up to 30% for some), while energy consumption has dropped by 4.56%. The relaunch time for camera applications has improved by 4.48%, and the overall system boot time has been reduced by 0.8 seconds (1.5%).\n
When providing partial access to content in the photo selection interface, it is now possible to mark only the photos and videos previously selected, simplifying the handling of frequently requested images and videos.\n
In the configurator (Settings \u2192 System \u2192 Languages & Input \u2192 System languages \u2192 Choose how you\u2019re addressed), users can now set their preferred form of address (male, female, neutral), which will be used to adapt grammar in system communications. This setting is currently available only for the French language.\n
Additional API elements have been added to ensure a smooth transition to 'picture-in-picture' mode for applications with interface elements displayed over the main user interface.\n
Users can now select a vibration effect to notify them of new notifications.\n
The Health Connect repository has added support for new types of data used during sports activities and nutrition tracking. For example, a field for monitoring skin temperature has been added, and a structure for defining workout plans has been implemented.\n
Correct text clipping has been ensured for fonts that reproduce handwritten text.
