The OpenSSH developers have begun splitting sshd into several individual executable files. The first step was adding a change to the OpenSSH codebase that separates the sshd-session process, which handles session-related tasks. The sshd process retains functions responsible for accepting network connections, checking configuration, loading host keys, and managing launched processes in accordance with the MaxStartups parameter. Thus, the sshd executable now contains the minimal functionality necessary to accept a new network connection and initiate sshd-session for session handling. In the future, they plan to continue separating functionalities into individual processes.
