Microsoft has announced the development of a graphical configurator for WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux), a layer for running Linux applications on Windows. The configurator will simplify the setup of WSL to suit individual needs and allow users to manage and view various WSL parameters without the need for manual editing of the '.wslconfig' file. <\/p>\n

The main issue with '.wslconfig' is the difficulty in understanding which settings are available and what values can be set for them. The graphical configurator presents all possible settings, grouped by categories, and includes an indicator of whether a particular parameter can be applied in the current system. At the same time, the ability to configure via the '.wslconfig' file will also be preserved, allowing users to use both the GUI and the text configuration file simultaneously.

Other changes in WSL include the default activation of certain settings that were previously classified as experimental. In particular, the settings 'autoMemoryReclaim=dropCache' for automatically reclaiming freed memory back to Windows, and 'dnsTunneling=true' for DNS tunneling in Windows 11, have been enabled. <\/p>\n

From the experimental features, the option 'wsl --manage --set-sparse ' has been added for automatically reclaiming released disk space back to the main system, along with the 'networkingMode=mirrored' parameter to enable network mirroring, which is necessary for supporting IPv6<\/a>. <\/p>\n

A plugin has been added to Microsoft Defender for WSL, allowing the use of Microsoft Defender for Endpoint to monitor WSL environments. Additionally, integration with WSL has been provided, allowing management of settings through Intune. In the future, the ability to use the Dev Home configurator for managing and launching WSL environments will also be added.
