After 6 months of development, the release of the postmarketOS project 24.06 has been introduced, advancing a Linux distribution for smartphones based on the Alpine Linux packaging base, the standard C library Musl, and the BusyBox utilities. The goal of the project is to provide a Linux distribution for smartphones that is independent of the life cycle support of official firmware and not tied to standard solutions from major industry players that dictate the direction of development. Builds are prepared for PINE64 PinePhone, Purism Librem 5, and 50 community-supported devices, including OnePlus 6, Google Nexus 10, Nokia N900, Lenovo A6000, ASUS MeMo Pad 7, and various Samsung Galaxy and Xiaomi models. Limited experimental support is provided for over 500 devices.<\/p>\n
The postmarketOS environment is maximally unified and moves all device-specific components into separate packages; all other packages are identical across devices and based on Alpine Linux packages. Where possible, vanilla Linux kernels are used in builds, and if that\u2019s not feasible, kernels from the firmware prepared by device manufacturers are utilized. The main user interfaces offered include KDE Plasma Mobile, Phosh, GNOME Mobile, and Sxmo, but there is also the option to install other environments, including MATE and Xfce.<\/p>\n

The number of officially supported devices by developers and the community, for which ready-made builds are being created, has increased from 45 to 50. Compared to postmarketOS version 23.12, support has been added for the common platform 'Generic x86_64', suitable for installation on many standard PCs and laptops. Support has also been added for the platform 'NVIDIA Tegra armv7', which can be used on devices with SoC NVIDIA Tegra 2\/3\/4, including Asus Transformer, Google Nexus 7 (2012), LG Optimus Vu, Microsoft Surface RT, and WEXLER Tab 7t. Additionally, separate builds for Google Nexus 10 and Lenovo ThinkPad X13s have been added. \n and Microsoft Surface RT. <\/p>\n
The release includes 211 devices from the 'testing' category, with varying levels of support ranging from the ability to boot to the functionality of almost all features. Builds for these devices can be prepared using the pmbootstrap tool and ready-made packages from the project's repository.\n
The package base is synchronized with Alpine Linux 3.20.\n
The KDE Plasma Mobile shell has been updated to version 6.0.3 (previously version 5.27.11 was provided). The completely rewritten home screen Folio is utilized, allowing users to freely place applications and widgets on pages, organize apps into thematic sections, view a complete list of applications (upward swipe gesture), and search using KRunner (downward swipe gesture). A setup wizard interface has been added, displayed at first launch, allowing quick configuration of Wi-Fi, cellular connection settings, timezone, scaling level, and screen brightness.\n

The GNOME Mobile user environment has been updated, featuring a version of the GNOME Shell interface designed for use on smartphones and tablets with touch screens. GNOME Mobile components have been moved to the GNOME Shell 46 branch. Among the improvements is a new handler that modifies task scheduler settings for individual processes (selecting high-performance or energy-efficient cores on ARM CPUs) to enhance interface responsiveness, as well as the ability to display an on-screen keyboard with a double-tap on the bottom panel. \n

The Phosh environment, based on GNOME technologies and developed by Purism for the Librem 5 smartphone, has been updated to version 0.39 (previously version 0.33). Changes include the ability to organize applications into folders in the overview mode, support for devices with screens that have rounded corners or notches, the ability to select a wireless network through the quick settings dropdown panel, and the opening of the on-screen keyboard upon long-pressing the bottom panel.\n

The Sxmo (Simple X Mobile) graphical shell, based on the Sway compositor and adhering to Unix philosophy, has been updated to version 1.16.3, which improves energy-saving mode management and adds settings for the Nokia N900, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, and PineTab 2.\n

New green wallpapers have been added for all supported interfaces.\n
New keyboard shortcuts have been introduced for Chromebook devices. Support for GPU acceleration has been implemented for Samsung Chromebooks.\n
