The ExectOS project has attempted to create a new operating system from scratch, equipped with a microkernel based on XT architecture, inspired by the Windows NT kernel. In ExectOS, the core components are separated from the subsystem that supports device driver operation, allowing the core to be updated without the need to recompile drivers for the new kernel. The project's code is written in C and is distributed under the GPLv3 license.<\/p>\n
The operating system is being developed with an eye towards providing a layer for running existing applications that utilize the Win32 API, as well as the ability to use drivers supplied for Windows. Currently, such layers are only in planning, and instead, proprietary applications and drivers are used. The differences from ReactOS stem from the fact that ExectOS is developing a separate self-sufficient OS with its XT architecture, providing a compatibility layer for Windows applications, while ReactOS attempts to replicate Windows.<\/p>\n
The XT kernel architecture provides preemptive multitasking and includes two basic layers: a microkernel and components that operate in user space. The kernel-level components run in a separate protected memory area and have full access to hardware and system resources. Unlike the NT kernel, XT does not have a separate Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) that acts as a layer between hardware and the rest of the operating system. <\/p>\n
The user level includes subsystems that allow for the execution of applications written for different operating systems. For example, such subsystems may implement layers to support a POSIX-compatible environment or to enable running programs based on the Win32 API. The project is also developing its own loader, the XT Boot Loader, which supports UEFI, and the XTChain build toolset based on LLVM\/Clang\/LLD.<\/p>\n
The system currently supports only processors based on i686 and x86_64 architectures, but the build tools also support the ARM64 architecture. The project has been evolving since 2022, but development has not yet progressed beyond the initial stage. Test builds are periodically generated for testing the current state, which can be run in QEMU or loaded on EFI systems from a USB drive.<\/p>\n
The reason for creating the new OS is the desire to free oneself from the constraints and limitations that could hinder the implementation of fundamentally new ideas in operating system design. Some ideas that the authors of ExectOS are striving to realize diverge significantly from the architecture of other projects, making it easier to implement them without regard to existing code.
