A new significant version of Linguist Translate has been released, a browser extension for full-feature translation from one language to another. The extension is privacy-oriented and, in addition to translation capabilities, includes a dictionary with bookmarks. It supports translation on the local system using engines such as Bergamot, LibreTranslator, TartuNLP, and LingvaTranslator, as well as connecting to external services like Google Translate, Yandex Translate, Bing Translate, DeepL, and ChatGPT. Custom translation modules can be added. The code is distributed under the BSD license. It supports operation in browsers based on the Chromium engine, as well as Firefox for Android.<\/p>\n

In the new version, the extension has been updated to the third version of the Chrome manifest (Manifest V3) in builds for browsers based on the Chromium engine, but it remains on Manifest V2 for Firefox due to the unimplemented \"offscreen\" and \"sandbox\" APIs for the third version of the manifest in Firefox. As a result of the transition to Manifest V3 in Chrome, the extension has stopped working for users on Windows 7 with Chrome version 109 and below, since those versions do not support the \"offscreen\" API. The switch to Manifest V3 has been driven by Chrome, which plans to begin disabling extensions using Manifest V2 in July 2024.<\/p>\n

Due to the peculiarities of the Chrome Web Store, which does not allow specifying supported browser versions for each extension version, users of Chrome version 109 and below can no longer use the old version of the extension after upgrading to the new version automatically. Users facing this issue can install version 5.0.17 in developer mode.<\/p>\n
