The FreeBSD Foundation has published a series of reports based on discussions from the recent FreeBSD developer summit held in Canada. Among the topics discussed at the summit are:<\/p>\n

Integrating the Rust toolkit into the core system, providing and rewriting applications in Rust, and enabling the development of kernel components in Rust. The advantages of Rust integration include improved security through the use of tools for safe memory management, while the downsides include the complexity of maintaining the Rust toolkit due to its short development cycle and frequent releases with significant changes. As in the previous discussion, no specific decisions have been made, only the prospects have been evaluated.\n
Defining goals, priorities, and plans concerning the FreeBSD 15 branch. One of the main goals mentioned is to create infrastructure for isolated containers, prepare official container images with FreeBSD, ensure integration with Kubernetes tooling, and improve networking capabilities for containers. The application of the ELF format for core dumps (to enhance diagnosis and problem resolution), adding installer support for installing themed groups of packages, including extended debugging tools in the release, improving infrastructure for testing and system builds, and expanding support for hardware architectures were also discussed.\n
Support for containers in the OCI (Open Container Initiative) format and the development of a fully functional container runtime port, containerd, for FreeBSD, as well as porting components of the Kubernetes platform for FreeBSD, such as kubeadm and kube-proxy, intended for deploying Kubernetes clusters.\n
Integration of advanced debugging tools and the bricoler utility, which simplifies the testing and debugging processes of patches proposed for FreeBSD.\n
Reducing the cycle of intermediate releases. In an optimistic scenario, intermediate releases are proposed to be published every 3 months instead of annually as is currently the case.\n
The Antithesis Deterministic Hypervisor project aims to integrate deterministic execution capabilities into the Bhyve hypervisor, ensuring repeatable results under identical initial conditions. Repeatable execution is essential for improving the efficiency of debugging processes and testing fixes.\n<\/ul>\n
