The OpenELA (Open Enterprise Linux Association), formed by CIQ (Rocky Linux), Oracle, and SUSE to unify efforts for RHEL compatibility, has announced the launch of an automated system that allows the release of source texts of packages to be made publicly available a few days after the latest Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) releases. Currently, the repository supported by the project contains src-packages corresponding to the current releases of RHEL 9.4 and 8.10, along with accumulated updates. <\/p>\n
OpenELA has taken over the role of the git.centos.org repository, which was discontinued by Red Hat. The packages offered in the OpenELA repository are distributed freely and without restrictions and can be used as a basis to create distributions that are binary-compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, behaving identically (at the error level) to RHEL and suitable as a replacement for RHEL. The repository is maintained through the collaborative efforts of the development teams of RHEL-compatible distributions, including Rocky Linux, Oracle Linux, and SUSE Liberty Linux. <\/p>\n
After the shutdown of git.centos.org as the sole public source for RHEL package code, the only remaining repository is CentOS Stream, which is not fully synchronized with RHEL, and the latest versions of packages do not always match those in RHEL. Typically, the development of CentOS Stream is conducted with a slight lead, but there are also instances where updates for some packages (like the kernel) in CentOS Stream may be published with a delay.
