An international group of scientists led by British colleagues has broken its own record<\/a><\/noindex> for data transmission speed over regular optical fiber. Previously, they achieved data transmission<\/a><\/noindex> at a level of 302 Tbps, while the new mark has been set at 402 Tbps. An important aspect of this achievement is that the experiment used standard commercial fiber, which promises to boost the speed of existing networks.<\/p>\n

Despite the progress made in optical communication, the demand for bandwidth is increasing both from companies and authorities as well as ordinary citizens. This issue can be resolved with money, but everyone would prefer to avoid additional costs. The solution proposed by researchers lies in this regard \u2014 bandwidth can be increased without changing the infrastructure, although new equipment for transmission and reception will obviously be required. However, this is clearly not comparable to the costs of laying new optical transmission lines.<\/p>\n

The proposal from researchers at Aston University, Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), and Nokia Bell Labs in the USA is based on expanding data transmission bands. Traditionally, fiber optics operated on the C and L wavebands. Then the researchers included two more bands: E and S. Finally, in their new work, they utilized two additional bands \u2014 O and U. The latter proved to be the most difficult to implement, as there are no corresponding receivers and transmitters available on the market. The team of scientists from the UK had to develop and manufacture their own equipment. <\/p>\n

Dr. Phillips from Aston University said: \u201cThis discovery could help increase the capacity of a single optical fiber, contributing to a more efficient system worldwide. The recently developed technology is expected to make a significant contribution to expanding the bandwidth of optical communication infrastructure, as future data transmission services will rapidly increase demand.\u201d<\/p>\n
