After three months of development, version 2.46 of the distributed source code management system Git has been released. Git is one of the most popular, reliable, and high-performance version control systems, offering flexible tools for non-linear development based on branching and merging. To ensure the integrity of history and resistance to \"backward\" changes, implicit hashing of the entire previous history is used in each commit. Digital signatures of developers can also authenticate individual tags and commits. Git's code is distributed under the GPLv2+ license. <\/p>\n
Compared to the previous release, the new version contains 746 changes, prepared with the participation of 96 developers, of which 31 are participating for the first time. Key innovations: <\/p>\n

Experimental support for a new type of bitmap \u2014 the \"pseudo-merge reachability bitmap\" \u2014 has been added. Unlike the \"reachability bitmap\" structure, data about sets of objects related to commits is stored not bound to each individual commit but linked to several commits at once. This organization allows the use of a single bitmap when determining objects for commits across different branches, enabling large repositories to avoid creating numerous separate bitmaps and significantly speeding up the object traversal for identifying which objects need to be sent to the client during operations like \"git fetch\", \"git rev-list\", and \"git clone\". A new command-line interface for the \"git config\" command has been implemented, replacing the scattered options for viewing, renaming, and deleting settings and sections, such as \"--get\", \"--get-all\", \"--unset\", and \"--remove-section\", with a set of separate subcommands. For example, to display all repository settings, you can now use the command \"git config list\", and to view the contents of a specific parameter \u2014 the command \"git config get \". Additionally, results can be further filtered using the option \"--regexp\" to specify a filter based on a regular expression.\n
The protocol «credential helper», used for transmitting credentials when accessing repositories with restricted access, has been updated to support new fields «authtype» and «credential», which enable the creation of handlers for HTTP authentication systems that go beyond login and password verification, such as when using Bearer Token in OAuth 2.0. Previously, working with such authentication systems required specifying sensitive data in plain text in the http.extraHeader parameter. Additionally, the protocol now includes the capability to save the state of each credential handler to support multi-step authentication methods used in protocols like NTLM and Kerberos.\n
The development of the experimental «reftable» backend has continued for efficient storage of branch and tag references in the repository. This backend uses a block storage system employed by the JGit project and is optimized for storing a very large number of references (traditional reference storage formats incur significant overhead in repositories with a large number of references due to the presence of too many files in one directory when storing references in the $GIT_DIR\/refs directory or the need to rewrite one large file during each update when storing references in the $GIT_DIR\/packed_refs file). The new version includes the command «git refs migrate \u2014ref-format=reftable» to convert existing repositories to the «reftable» backend (previously, this backend was only activated during repository initialization).\n
The git command has added an option «—no-advice», which disables all recommendation and hint messages. This can be useful in preventing the log from being cluttered with unnecessary information during automated calls to git.\n
The process of translating some checks from the test suite to use unit tests has begun, which will simplify the testing of low-level components and improve the testing process's efficiency on the Windows platform, where there are high overheads when running a large number of processes during the execution of tests implemented as shell scripts.\n
