The accompanying kernel packages from Canonical (Canonical Kernel Team) have announced a change in the process for selecting the Linux kernel version for upcoming Ubuntu releases. It has been decided to provide the latest available Linux kernel at the time of release in the distribution. Accordingly, the stabilization and preparation of kernel packages during the preparation of new Ubuntu versions can now be based not only on builds of an existing kernel release but also on the release candidates being published. <\/p>\n

Until now, the kernel version for the next Ubuntu release was selected based on the stable kernel release that existed at the time of the feature freeze for the future Ubuntu release. Given that new kernel branches are formed every 2-3 months, there often arose a situation where the Ubuntu release included the previous kernel branch, despite the publication of a new stable branch shortly before the Ubuntu release, which caused dissatisfaction among users who wanted the latest kernel with up-to-date features and hardware support. <\/p>\n

The new version selection process allows for choosing a kernel that is in the change acceptance stage or early release candidates at the time of the Ubuntu feature freeze. For the kernel version to be approved by the time of the beta version formation (about a month before the Ubuntu release), the kernel must be in the release stage or late release candidates (rc4 and newer). In the latter case, the kernel release will be issued shortly before the Ubuntu release, and the kernel package for Ubuntu will be tested based on pre-releases, which after 4 release candidates are generally already usable and include only bug fixes. For example, in the October release of Ubuntu 24.10, they plan to supply not the already available kernel 6.10, but kernel 6.11, the release of which is expected at the end of September.
