System76 has announced the start of open testing for the Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS distribution, which includes the new COSMIC desktop environment developed in Rust.<\/p>\n

The main feature of the new Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS release, aside from its foundation on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) and its long-term support capabilities, is the entirely new COSMIC desktop environment written in Rust.<\/p>\n

One of the key features of COSMIC is its high speed. Currently, it is arguably one of the fastest desktop environments for Linux.<\/p>\n

The system tray, which is absent in GNOME, is present in COSMIC. This is an important feature for most users, and its inclusion in COSMIC makes the desktop environment more functional.<\/p>\n

Tiling is one of the most notable features of COSMIC; it is integrated by default and can be toggled on or off as desired. You can customize the window behavior for different virtual desktops<\/a>, making work even more convenient.<\/p>\n
