Changes have been made to the codebase of the gnome-session, which is responsible for starting GNOME, as well as to the GDM display manager providing the login screen, allowing for a build without X11 support, leaving only the components for Wayland. Similar changes were accepted in June for the GNOME Shell and the Mutter compositor. The ability to build GNOME without X11 will enable developers of Fedora Linux and other distributions to exclude X11 components from the main builds and reduce maintenance efforts. <\/p>\n

The change is part of an ongoing initiative developed over the last two years to make X11 an optional dependency. The Wayland protocol session has been the default in GNOME since 2016, and some developers believe it's time to move away from the X11 session and focus on supporting only Wayland. Additionally, Red Hat has classified the X.Org server as deprecated in RHEL 9 and plans to remove it entirely in the significant future release RHEL 10.
