The creator of the unique Adelie Linux distribution, which uses the standard C library Musl, the OpenRC initialization system, and the APK package manager, announced the successful porting of the system manager systemd to work with the Musl library. Although the implementation is in its initial status, it is already quite stable and shows a threefold reduction in boot time compared to using OpenRC. <\/p>\n

Originally, systemd only supports working with the Glibc C library, but a separate project known as OpenEmbedded has developed a set of patches that allow systemd to be used in environments based on Musl. The new port aims to create a completely updated series of patches that ensure compatibility with the latest versions of systemd and musl, utilizing new features from both. The presented port is written from scratch and, except for the changes related to GLOB_BRACE support, malloc_info, and malloc_trim, does not overlap with the port from OpenEmbedded. \t <\/p>\n

It is noted that the Adelie Linux project has been considering the idea of enabling systemd to work in a Musl-based environment since 2015, but there have always been higher priority tasks until one company expressed readiness to finance the completion of the port. The new set of patches is initially being developed with the intention of promoting changes to the mainline systemd (some bugs identified during the porting process have already been forwarded to the main project). <\/p>\n

Among the known issues in the first version of the port is a problem with PolicyKit, which causes the KDE session to hang when attempting to restart systems through the widget. Additionally, unresolved tasks include the creation of unit files for the openrc initialization scripts used in the Adelie Linux distribution (it is planned to base them on unit files from Gentoo and Fedora).
