On this bright day (October 20, 2004), a cool guy named Mark Shuttleworth thought that there were a huge number of Linux distributions in the world, but none of them worked as they should. None could be offered to users as a replacement for Windows, which dominated the desktop operating system market. Something had to be done about this. Observing this chaos, he decided to create his own 'Linux for people' that 'just worked' and could be downloaded and installed on any average PC instead of the usual Windows system, which was still paid, proprietary, and filled with backdoors. And he did it! Mark gave us a simpler Linux, the first versions of which could even be installed and configured by an average person. Many argue about which version of Ubuntu (and its derivatives, such as Kubuntu) came closest to being a full replacement for Windows \u2014 some say version 8.04, some 10.04 or 12.04. <\/p>\n

Ubuntu became a window into the world of Linux for tens of millions of people who previously couldn't access it due to its complexity, confusion, obscurity, and sheer unfriendliness. Mark helped all these people take their first steps into Linux. Many ended up sticking with this distribution, which became their primary OS for work and entertainment. Some continued their journey, eventually switching to other distributions. Over time, Ubuntu introduced Steam and evolved into a full-fledged gaming platform, becoming even closer and friendlier to ordinary users. The growing popularity has led to a large amount of new software \u2014 more and more people are choosing Ubuntu as their main OS, while Windows gradually loses market share. Not least, the popularity of Linux (and specifically, Ubuntu) has been boosted by new software distribution systems such as Snap, Flatpak, and AppImage, which have brought a huge amount of new free and proprietary software to Linux.<\/p>\n

There are many people who criticize Ubuntu and Mark Shuttleworth for various decisions that are not always perfect. However, it is hard to argue that thanks to Ubuntu, the popularity of Linux has grown exponentially, and today we can easily find top PCs and laptops with Linux pre-installed in stores. Could anyone have imagined 10 or 15 years ago that Linux would become the main operating system for the most popular portable console in the world, the Steam Deck? None of this would have been possible if it weren't for one cool guy taking that first small step.<\/p>\n
