The release of the Wi-Fi daemon iwd 3.0 (iNet Wireless Daemon), developed by Intel as an alternative to the wpa_supplicant toolkit for connecting Linux systems to wireless networks, is now available. Iwd can be used both as a standalone application and as a backend for network configurators like Network Manager and ConnMan. The project is suitable for use on embedded devices and is optimized for minimal memory and disk space consumption. Iwd does not use external libraries and relies solely on the capabilities provided by the standard Linux kernel (only the Linux kernel and Glibc are required). It includes its own implementation of a DHCP client and a set of cryptographic functions. The project code is written in C and is distributed under the LGPLv2.1 license. <\/p>\n

In the new release, alongside bug fixes, support has been added for external authentication mode on systems with chipsets based on the FullMAC architecture, which involves implementing the wireless stack on the chip's firmware side rather than in the system driver. The external authentication mode (CMD_EXTERNAL_AUTH) can be used with drivers that do not support full processing of the SAE (Simultaneous Authentication of Equals) authentication protocol on the firmware side and do not provide CMD_ASSOCIATE and CMD_AUTHENTICATE commands. In this case, the firmware can provide the CMD_EXTERNAL_AUTH command to engage an external authenticator for processing SAE frames in user space.
