The company iXsystems has released the TrueNAS SCALE 24.10 distribution, which uses the Linux kernel and Debian package base (previous products from this company, including TrueOS, PC-BSD, TrueNAS, and FreeNAS, were based on FreeBSD). Like TrueNAS CORE (FreeNAS), TrueNAS SCALE can be downloaded and used for free. The size of the ISO image is 1.4 GB. The source code for the TrueNAS SCALE-specific build scripts, web interface, and layers is published on GitHub. <\/p>\n

The TrueNAS SCALE edition based on Linux is now the primary version, while the TrueNAS CORE branch based on FreeBSD is in maintenance mode, where they plan to fix bugs and security issues for several more years. New features and new component versions will only be developed in the TrueNAS SCALE branch. TrueNAS SCALE is not the only Linux-based variant of FreeNAS; in 2009, the OpenMediaVault distribution was forked from FreeNAS, which switched to the Linux kernel and a Debian package base. <\/p>\n

Among the features of TrueNAS SCALE is the ability to create storage solutions that span multiple nodes, while TrueNAS CORE (FreeNAS) was positioned as a single-server solution. In addition to increased scalability, TrueNAS SCALE also features the use of isolated containers, simplifying for infrastructure management<\/a> and making it suitable for the creation of software-defined infrastructures. TrueNAS SCALE utilizes ZFS (OpenZFS) as its file system. It provides support for Docker containers, KVM-based virtualization, and scaling across multiple nodes using Minio or Syncthing. <\/p>\n

To organize access to storage, SMB, NFS, iSCSI Block Storage, S3 Object API, and Cloud Sync are supported. For secure access, connections can be made via VPN<\/a> (OpenVPN). Storage can be deployed on a single node and gradually horizontally scaled in response to increasing needs by adding additional nodes. In addition to handling storage-related tasks, nodes can also be used to provide services and run applications in containers orchestrated using the Docker platform or in virtual machines based on KVM. <\/p>\n
