GitHub has published a report analyzing statistics for 2024. Key trends: <\/p>\n

Python has secured the first place in the programming language rankings, pushing JavaScript out of its position as the most popular language on GitHub. TypeScript maintained its third place, having pushed Java down to fourth in last year's rankings. C has fallen to ninth place, ceding eighth place to Shell.

In the ranking of the fastest-growing languages, Python leads, followed by TypeScript, Go, and HCL.

In new repositories created in 2024, the most commonly used languages are JavaScript, Python, Java, TypeScript, and C#.

In 2024, 108 million new repositories were created on GitHub (compared to 98 million in 2023, 85.7 million in 2022, 61 million in 2021, and 60 million in 2020). The total number of projects reached 518 million (+25%). <\/li>\n
The overall contribution of participants to all projects is estimated at 5.2 billion actions (commits, issues, pull requests, discussions, reviews, etc.). In comparison, 4.5 billion actions were performed in 2023, and 3.5 billion in 2022.\n
Contributions to open and publicly accessible projects are estimated at 1 billion actions (the remaining 4.2 billion (82%) were made in private repositories).\n
The top 10 countries in the ranking remained unchanged for the year: the USA still leads in the number of developers, followed by India, China, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Russia, and Germany.

India's community is recognized as the fastest-growing; sustaining this growth rate, it will surpass the USA's community by 2027. The German community is predicted to drop from seventh to eighth place in 2026, while Russia's community is projected to fall from sixth to ninth place in 2025.

In terms of contributions to open projects, developers from the USA lead by a large margin, while Russia did not make it into the top ten (activity from Russia is mainly associated with private repositories). Over the past year, 1.4 million new participants joined the development of open projects on GitHub.

The projects leading in the number of first-time contributors to open projects are VSCode, Home Assistant, Microsoft PowerToys, java2bedrock.sh, ultralytics, flutter, langchain, and Ultimaker Cura.\n
The most popular repositories by number of participants are home-assistant (21K), vscode (20K), leo (20K), first-contributions (13K), flutter (10K), NixOS nixpkgs (9K), next.js (9K), langchain (8K), godot (7K), and ollama (7K). <\/li>\n
In the past year, 70,000 new public or open projects developing generative AI systems were added (in 2023, 65,000 were added). The number of changes made to AI projects increased by 60% over the year. The total number of AI projects reached 137,000. Among the most popular AI projects are: stable-diffusion-webui, AutoGPT, ollama, gpt4all, gpt_academic, ComfyUI.

Over the year, a leak of 39 million keys, tokens, and other sensitive data forgotten by developers in code was recorded through repositories. The most common type of vulnerability became issues related to code injection (for example, SQL injection).

Nomination 'Wonderfully Welcoming': the Home Assistant project, which develops a platform for smart homes. <\/li>\n
Nomination 'Noteworthy Newcomer': Abi Raja for the screenshot-to-code project with a tool for generating code based on interface layouts and screenshots (utilizing AI systems Claude Sonnet 3.5 and GPT-4o). <\/li>\n
Nomination 'Global Grandiose': the web framework GatsbyJS (based on React). <\/li>\n
Nomination 'Awesome AI': Ollama, a toolkit for locally running large language models. <\/li>\n
Nomination 'Supply Chain Sentinel': Simon Gerst for promoting CodeQL. <\/li>\n
