A new version of dd_rescue 1.99.17 has been released, a utility for recovering data from failing media, backing up, and deploying disk images. It should not be confused with the GNU ddrescue utility, as dd_rescue has additional useful features, such as support for sparse files, bypassing the cache for input\/output, and transparent compression and encryption. The dd_rescue utility is included with many popular GNU\/Linux distributions, such as Fedora, openSUSE, Mageia, and ALT Linux. The utility's code is written in C and is distributed under the GPLv2+ license. <\/p>\n
The new version adds support for transparent compression and decompression using the LZMA algorithm, allowing, in particular, the use of disk images compressed in xz format. The LZMA algorithm demonstrates a higher compression level at the cost of increased CPU load compared to the previously used LZO algorithm. The liblzma library was chosen for the implementation of the LZMA algorithm, which became notoriously known after a backdoor was discovered in it that was intentionally placed by an attacker who gained maintainer status.
