After more than a year of development, the release of the open-source parametric 3D modeling system FreeCAD 1.0 has been published, featuring flexible customization and functionality expansion through the addition of plugins. The interface is built using the Qt library. Plugins can be created in Python. Support is provided for saving and loading models in various formats, including STEP, IGES, and STL. The FreeCAD code is distributed under the LGPLv2 license, with Open CASCADE used as the modeling core. Ready-made builds are prepared for Linux (AppImage), macOS, and Windows. <\/p>\n

FreeCAD allows users to explore different design options by changing model parameters and evaluating the work at various stages of the model's development. The project can serve as a free alternative to commercial CAD software such as CATIA, Solid Edge, and SolidWorks. Although FreeCAD is primarily aimed at mechanical engineering and product design development, the system can also be used in other fields, such as architectural design. <\/p>\n

A significant change in the version number is explained by reaching a certain milestone in development. The project has existed for more than 20 years, and many years ago, the developer community established criteria that defined the functionality corresponding to release 1.0. The current version implements the last two tasks from this list \u2014 solving the problem of topological naming and implementing a built-in module for designing the work of assembly structures (Assembly). <\/p>\n

The essence of the topological naming problem is that when performing operations on the model, such as extrusion (pad), cutting (cut), union (union), bevel (chamfer), or fillet (fillet), the structure of the model could change, and accordingly, the internal names of the objects (forms) used to track dependencies and relationships could also change. The new version implements the Realthunder algorithm, ensuring the preservation of the relationships of objects in the model after changing the topology in the parametric chain. <\/p>\n

The second significant change is the new built-in workbench for designing assembly structures made up of separate parts (Assembly Workbench), built using the developments of the Ondsel Solver project.
