Linus Torvalds has accepted a change to the Linux kernel that removes the implementation of the ReiserFS file system. This file system was declared obsolete last year and was scheduled for removal in 2025.<\/p>\n
The change has been accepted into the branch from which kernel 6.13 is being formed (release is expected in early February). The key reason for the removal of ReiserFS was the desire to reduce maintenance efforts in the kernel for changes covering various file systems, such as the transition to a new API for mounting, iomap, and folios. The user base of ReiserFS is estimated to be minimal.<\/p>\n
Issues with ReiserFS also included stagnation in the maintenance of this file system, the unresolved Year 2038 problem, and the lack of features for fault tolerance offered by modern file systems to protect against corruption in the event of a crash or compromise. The last major distribution to support ReiserFS was openSUSE, but two years ago the openSUSE developers stopped supporting this file system in the Tumbleweed repository. Support for ReiserFS in SUSE was terminated 6 years ago. A pull request to remove ReiserFS from kernel 6.13 was submitted by an employee of SUSE.<\/p>\n
