The openSUSE project has released the atomically updated distribution openSUSE Leap Micro 6.1, intended for creating microservices and serving as a base system for virtualization platforms and container isolation. Installation builds are available for x86_64 and ARM64 (Aarch64) architectures, as well as ready-made system images for virtualization systems. <\/p>\n
The openSUSE Leap Micro distribution is based on the MicroOS project technologies and is positioned as a community version of the commercial product SUSE Linux Enterprise Micro, distinguished by the lack of a graphical interface. Setup can be done using the Cockpit web interface, allowing system management through the browser, the cloud-init toolkit for passing settings at each boot, or Combustion for applying configurations during the first boot. Users are afforded the ability to quickly switch from Leap Micro to SUSE SLE Micro (initially implementing a solution based on Leap Micro for free and later transferring the existing configuration to the SUSE SLE Micro product if extended support or certification is needed). <\/p>\n
Leap Micro employs an atomic update mechanism, automatically downloading and applying updates. Unlike atomic updates based on ostree and snap, used in Fedora and Ubuntu, openSUSE Leap Micro utilizes standard package management tools (the transactional-update utility) combined with Btrfs filesystem snapshot mechanisms (snapshots are used for atomic switching between the system states before and after applying updates). In case of issues after updates, the system can be rolled back to its previous state. Live patches are supported for updating the Linux kernel without rebooting and halting operations. <\/p>\n
The root partition is mounted in read-only mode and is not changed during operation. To launch isolated containers, a toolkit that supports Podman\/CRI-O and Docker systems is integrated. A micro-edit of the distribution is used in the SLFO (SUSE Linux Framework One) project to ensure the functioning of the «host OS» environment. In SLFO, a trimmed version of the «host OS» is suggested for operation over the hardware, while all user space applications and components are run not in a mixed environment, but in separate containers or in virtual machines<\/a>, executed over the «host OS» and isolated from one another. <\/p>\n
