The release of the free boot firmware Libreboot 20241206 has been published, achieving stable release status, focused on refining the functionality added in experimental releases. The project develops a ready-made build of the Coreboot project, providing an alternative to proprietary UEFI and BIOS firmwares responsible for initializing the CPU, memory, peripherals, and other hardware components, while minimizing binary blobs. <\/p>\n
Libreboot aims to create a system environment that can operate without proprietary software as much as possible, not only at the operating system level but also in the firmware that handles booting. Libreboot complements Coreboot with tools that simplify the process for end-users, forming a ready-to-use distribution that any user without special skills can utilize. <\/p>\n
The new version adds support for the Lenovo ThinkPad T480 and Lenovo ThinkPad T480S laptops, as well as the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF and Dell OptiPlex 780 MT desktops. Improved support for the Dell OptiPlex 3050 Micro PC is also included. To disable Boot Guard on Intel Skylake, Kaby Lake, and Coffee Lake systems with Intel MEv11.x firmwares, the deguard utility, which exploits the CVE-2017-5705 vulnerability, is used to bypass the loading of only officially signed firmwares. U-Boot has been updated to version 2024.10 for ARM64 systems. SeaBIOS has been synchronized with the main project repository as of October 17. <\/p>\n
