After two years of development, the release of the Xfce 4.20 desktop environment has been presented, offering a classic desktop that consumes minimal system resources whenever possible.<\/p>\n

Xfce consists of several interconnected components that can be used in other projects if desired. Among these components are the xfwm4 window manager, an application launcher panel, session manager, power management system, graphical configurator, Thunar file manager, Orage calendar-scheduler, Parole media player, Mousepad text editor, and xfce4-terminal terminal emulator.<\/p>\n

A key innovation in the Xfce 4.20 branch is the experimental support for the Wayland protocol. The Wayland session encompasses most features, but is currently recommended only for advanced users as it is not yet free of bugs and requires separate improvements for full everyday use by regular users. The command 'startxfce4 \u2013wayland' is proposed to start a Wayland session.<\/p>\n

To abstract operations over Wayland and X11 in Xfce 4.20, a new library, libxfce4windowing, has been implemented. This library provides a graphics system-independent layer with window management components (screens, root windows, virtual desktops, etc.). This proposed layer allows for Wayland support in almost all Xfce components while maintaining their ability to operate in window systems based on the X11 protocol.<\/p>\n

Instead of libmutter, the wlroots library, developed by the Sway project, is used in the Wayland session. Labwc or Wayfire are recommended as composite servers for the Wayland session. The xfwm4 window manager continues to be used in the X11 session. In the future, the xfwm4 plans to add support for not only X11 but also Wayland.<\/p>\n

Among the features currently unavailable in the Wayland session are: lack of support virtual desktops<\/a>; pages with keyboard and mouse settings in the configurator are not ready; the ability to create screenshots only of the entire screen (not individual windows); the absence of icons for some applications in the system tray, not translated from API GtkStatusIcon to StatusNotifier. On Wayland, the following components remain untranslated: Xfwm4, Xfdashboard, Xfce4-screensaver (there is a port, but it was not included in the release), Xfce4-windowck-plugin and Xfce4-xkb-plugin.<\/p>\n
