A new attack method has been identified that allows bypassing the mechanisms against generating dangerous content, used in AI services based on large language models. The method, codenamed BoN (Best-of-N), was able to circumvent the restrictions of the GPT-4o model in 89% of cases during testing on 10,000 requests, the Claude 3.5 Sonnet model in 78%, and the Gemini Pro in 50%. The toolkit for conducting the attack has been published under the MIT license. <\/p>\n

The method works for text and voice queries, as well as for input defined as graphic images. The essence of the attack lies in distorting the original query to such an extent that the mechanisms designed to protect against dangerous content cease to respond, while the base model continues to comprehend the meaning. The algorithm for generating a bypassing text query involves introducing random noise into the request and changing the case of characters. Distortions are introduced gradually by repeating the operation until the filter is successfully bypassed. <\/p>\n
