After the development stage (the "unstable" category) is completed, the protocol is placed in the "staging" branch and officially included in the wayland-protocols set, and after testing is completed, it moves to the stable category. Protocols in the "staging" category can already be applied in composite servers and clients where related functionality is required. Unlike the "unstable" category, changes that break compatibility are prohibited in "staging", but if problems and issues are discovered during testing, the replacement with a new significant version of the protocol or another Wayland extension cannot be ruled out.

The new version introduces an additional promotion phase for protocols — "experimental," aimed at reducing the barrier for protocols to be included in the Wayland-Protocols set, accelerating the delivery of protocols to developers, and encouraging early implementation in existing projects. This new phase will relieve protocol developers from lengthy discussions and bureaucratic hurdles before being accepted into the Wayland-Protocols.

If entering the "staging" phase requires forming a support team and receiving a certain number of confirmations (ACK) from review participants, then to enter "experimental," it is sufficient to have no objections (NACK) within a two-week review period. In the "experimental" phase, changes that disrupt compatibility are allowed, as well as the addition of "raw" protocols that can be gradually refined to the required standard.

The following protocols have been added to the "staging" category:

ext-data-control — allows privileged clients to manage data processing, for example, for implementing clipboard managers.

ext-workspace — implements the concept of virtual desktops and offers events with information about the state of the workspaces, as well as features for activating and deactivating workspaces. The protocol can be used to create panels and indicators that display the list of available virtual desktops and allow switching between them.

Currently, the wayland-protocols package includes the following stable protocols that ensure backward compatibility:

"viewporter" — allows the client to perform actions for scaling and cropping the edges of a surface on the server side.

"presentation-time" — ensures video display.

'xdg-shell' — an interface for creating and interacting with surfaces as windows, allowing them to be moved across the screen, minimized, maximized, resized, etc.

'linux-dmabuf' — enables the sharing of multiple graphics cards using DMA-BUF technology (allows creating a wl_buffer based on DMA-BUF).

«tablet» — organization of input from graphic tablets.

Protocols tested in the «staging» branch:

drm-lease — provides resources needed to create a stereoscopic image with different buffers for the left and right eyes when outputting to virtual reality headsets.

«ext-session-lock» — defines means of session locking, such as during a screensaver operation or when displaying an authentication dialog.

«single-pixel-buffer» — allows the creation of single-pixel buffers that include four 32-bit RGBA values.

«xdg-activation» — allows focus to be passed between different first-level surfaces (for example, using xdg-activation one application can shift focus to another).

content-type — enables clients to pass information to the compositor server about the displayed content, which can be used to optimize behavior based on the content, such as setting specific DRM properties, like "content type." Support for the following content types is announced: none (no data type information), photo (output of digital photos requiring minimal processing), video (video or animation requiring more precise synchronization to avoid stuttering), and game (launching games requiring output with minimal latency).

ext-idle-notify — enables composite servers to send notifications about user inactivity to clients, which can be used to activate additional power-saving modes after a certain period of inactivity.

tearing-control — allows disabling vertical synchronization (VSync) with the frame-destroying pulse in fullscreen applications to prevent tearing. In multimedia applications, artifact appearance due to tearing is an undesirable effect, but in gaming programs, some artifacts can be tolerated if combating them leads to additional delays.

ext-foreign-toplevel-list — retrieves information about surfaces located at the highest level (toplevel) that allow for window pinning over other content, for example, for connecting custom panels and window switches.

security-context — enables the identification of clients using sandbox isolation. A client can register a new connection to a composite server based on Wayland and attach a security context to it, after which the composite manager will restrict the capabilities available for the established connection according to the specified security context.

cursor-shape — an alternative method for setting the appearance of the cursor, based on transmitting a series of cursor images instead of binding to a surface (wl_surface).

«ext-transient-seat» — intended for creating temporary independent seats, designed for use with virtual input devices. For example, when implementing connection capabilities to a remote desktop, the protocol allows creating a separate session with a virtual keyboard and mouse for each user.

«xdg-toplevel-drag» — extends the drag & drop mechanism by enabling the attachment of toplevel windows to a drag operation, which can be used, for example, for organizing dragging toolbars or browser tabs with the mouse. The new protocol allows for creating detachable parts of a window, which, when dragged from this window, become new windows and can move over an existing window before reattaching.

«xdg-dialog» — allows assigning toplevel surfaces dialog-specific traits, for example, creating modal dialogs that block user interaction with the rest of the interface.

'linux-drm-syncobj' — provides tools for explicit synchronization of buffers using DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) synchronization objects. It is expected that in the context of synchronization during buffer rendering, the proposed protocol will improve interactions with drivers based on graphics APIs Vulkan and OpenGL (implementation relies on handlers in the drivers). The new protocol allows ensuring that the rendering operation to the buffer is completed before the compositor displays this buffer.

alpha-modifier, allowing clients to change the transparency level of the surface and offloading transparency operations to the composite server, which can, in turn, redirect these operations to KMS.

xdg-toplevel-icon — binds an icon to a top-level window.

ext-image-capture-source and ext-image-copy-capture — organization of capturing content displayed on the screen.

xdg-system-bell — allows for outputting a system signal, which can be used, for example, as a warning in terminal emulators. The way the signal is output is determined at the discretion of the compositor; it can be not just sound but also a visual response.

fifo — implements a FIFO mechanism (first come, first served) for updating the content queue of the displayed surface. From a practical standpoint, the protocol allows the use of waiting for vertical sync (vblank) during output instead of using callback calls for every readiness to display a new frame, which addresses the issue of high GPU load when using VSync.

commit-timing — enables attaching a time constraint to the surface content (the compositor must display the content change within the specified time if possible, but not before).

Protocols developed in the «unstable» branch:

«fullscreen-shell» — manages the operation in fullscreen mode.

"input-method" — processing of input methods.

"idle-inhibit" — preventing the screensaver from starting.

"input-timestamps" — timestamps for input events.

"keyboard-shortcuts-inhibit" — managing the attachment of keyboard shortcuts and hotkeys.

"linux-explicit-synchronization" — a Linux-specific buffer synchronization mechanism tied to the surface.

"pointer-gestures" — control from touchscreen devices.

"pointer constraints" — limitations on pointers (blocking).

"primary-selection" — similar to X11, it provides functionality for the primary clipboard, where information is usually pasted via the middle mouse button.

"relative pointer events" — relative pointer events.

"text-input" — organization of text input.

"xdg-foreign" — interface for interaction with the surfaces of a "neighboring" client.

"xdg-decoration" — window decoration rendering on the server side.

"xdg-output" — additional information about video output (used for fractional scaling).

"xwayland-keyboard-grab" — capturing input in XWayland applications.

Source: <a content="nofollow" rel="nofollow"
