The release of the Ghostty terminal emulator 1.0.0 has been published, utilizing GPU for accelerated rendering of content. The project is developed by Mitchell Hashimoto, co-founder of HashiCorp and creator of such projects as Vagrant and Terraform. The author of Ghostty aims to embody three qualities in the new terminal emulator\u2014high performance, extensive functionality, and an interface that looks native to each supported platform. The project's code is written in Zig and is distributed under the MIT license. Built versions are available for Linux and macOS. <\/p>\n

For building the interface in the Linux builds, the GTK library is utilized, while for macOS, the SwiftUI framework is employed, allowing the use of native dialogs, menus, settings interfaces, and window styling for each platform. To accelerate rendering on Linux, the OpenGL graphics API is used, while on macOS, Metal is implemented. Performance is also enhanced by using a separate thread for input\/output. <\/p>\n

In conducted tests, Ghostty proved to be four times faster than the iTerm and Kitty terminal emulators, and twice as fast as Terminal.app when displaying a large file, such as with the command \u201ccat big_file.txt\u201d. When compared to Alacritty, Ghostty's performance was roughly at the same level, but Alacritty lags behind Ghostty in functionality. <\/p>\n

The terminal can display emojis, hyperlinks, complex graphemes, and ligatures (the merging of several characters into one, such as \u201c\u00e6\u201d). The Kitty protocol can be used for displaying images directly in the terminal. To embed Ghostty\u2019s functionality into other applications, the libghostty library is being developed, which is compatible with C projects and allows for quick integration of the terminal emulator into your products. <\/p>\n

The interface supports both dark and light themes, window splitting for simultaneous display of multiple sessions, and session switching via tabs. The terminal complies with the ECMA-4 standard but also supports extensions and escape sequences not included in the standard, such as those offered in xterm.
