After 22 years since the formation of branch 3.0 in 2002, the release of the Privoxy 4.0.0 proxy server has taken place, designed for creating personal web content filters. With Privoxy, you can eliminate ads, discard tracking cookies, remove pop-up dialogs, block the loading of third-party JavaScript, and make any necessary arbitrary changes to web pages. Privoxy supports installation on both local systems for individual users and on servers to create a centralized content filtering infrastructure in a local network. The project code is written in C and is distributed under the GPLv2+ license. <\/p>\n
Among the advanced features of Privoxy, we can highlight: the ability to bind tags to change the behavior of filters depending on specific client and server HTTP headers; an HTTPS inspection mode that allows filtering of HTTPS requests and responses; use of regular expressions in configuration files; and the ability to replace animated GIFs with static images. Privoxy can be used to block ads and unwanted content on devices where it is not possible to install relevant browser add-ons. <\/p>\n

Support for cryptographic libraries wolfSSL and mbedTLS 3.x for inspecting HTTPS has been added. Compared to mbedTLS, the wolfSSL library supports TLS 1.3 and operates twice as fast. In comparison with OpenSSL 3.x, wolfSSL falls behind in performance when using elliptic curves.\n
A toolkit for testing the performance of Privoxy has been added.\n
Support for the pcre2 regular expression library has been added.\n
For certificates and key files, the SHA256 algorithm has been used instead of MD5.\n

The downloadable archive with the source code privoxy-4.0.0-stable-src.tar.gz was mistakenly flagged by antivirus programs as containing the malicious worm «Win32\/Nimda». Due to this false positive, SourceForge initially blocked the download of this archive but later lifted the block. There are reports of false blocks on channels and accounts on Facebook that published the direct link to privoxy-4.0.0-stable-src.tar.gz under the pretext of fighting malware distributors.
