After two and a half years of development, the twenty-seventh alpha release of the free game 0 A.D., featuring real-time strategy similar to the Age of Empires series, has been released. Like all previous releases, the new version is marked as 'alpha', but the developers have decided to move away from this tradition, and the next update will be labeled as '0 A.D. Release 28'. The alpha designation was given because not all originally planned features have been implemented. However, the existing functionality is polished and stable, and in terms of quality, 0 A.D. has long surpassed the alpha stage. <\/p>\n
The game's source code was opened by Wildfire Games in 2009 under the GPL license. Prior to this, the project had been developed as a proprietary product for nine years. The game is available for Linux (Ubuntu, Gentoo, Debian, openSUSE, Fedora, and Arch Linux), FreeBSD, OpenBSD, macOS, and Windows. The proposed version supports both multiplayer and single-player modes against bots on pre-modeled or dynamically generated maps. The game encompasses over ten civilizations that existed between 500 BC and 500 AD. <\/p>\n
Game components not related to code, such as graphical and audio elements, are released under the Creative Commons BY-SA license, allowing modifications and use in commercial products provided that attribution is given and derivative works are distributed under the same license. The 0 A.D. game engine contains approximately 200,000 lines of C++ code, uses OpenGL for rendering 3D graphics, OpenAL for audio, and ENet for organizing online gameplay. Among other open projects for creating real-time strategies are Glest, ORTS, Warzone 2100, and Spring. <\/p>\n

A backend for rendering using the Vulkan graphics API has been added to the game engine.\n
Support for AMD FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) super sampling technology has been added, which uses spatial upscaling algorithms and detail reconstruction to reduce the loss of image quality when scaling up and converting to higher resolutions. With AMD FSR, the output of the game 0 A.D. can be rendered at 4K quality.\n
A GPU Skinning mode has been added for skinning (binding a 3D model's animation to the skeleton) on the GPU using shaders (increases performance by 10-20 FPS).\n
The ability to save the state of a multiplayer game and resume the shared game from a saved position has been added.\n
A new 'Tips & Tricks' page has been added with hints and useful information.

The naval fleet has been revamped. Warships are now divided into scouting, assault, ramming, fire support, and siege categories. A new technology tree for warships has been proposed, stimulating an arms race for dominance at sea.\n
Signal flares that can be launched by observers have been implemented. Information about launched flares is displayed in the chat.\n
New automatically generated maps have been added: Foothills (well-viewed hilly terrain), Migration (islands with the task of capturing resources from a larger island), and Coast Range (a narrow strip between the sea and mountains).

A new battle map 'Isthmus of Corinth' has been added. The battle maps 'Watering Holes' and 'Sporades Islands' have been updated.

The distinction between the civilizations of Spartans, Romans, Athenians, and Macedonians has been enhanced.\n
Assault units made up of war elephants that surpass infantry and cavalry have been added.\n
New bonuses for winners have been added: chariots (less maneuverable but sturdier than cavalry), spear cavalry (armored but slow), and longswords (dealing more damage).\n
A second music album has been prepared, featuring 19 tracks for the game 0 A.D.\n
The JavaScript engine SpiderMonkey has been updated to version 115 (previously version 78 was used). The graphical interface and simulation code now allow the use of Promise and async\/await.\n
Users are now provided with the option to change their multiplayer game password.\n
Horizontal scrolling support for content that doesn't fit within the screen width has been implemented in the graphical interface.\n
