The release of MaXX Interactive Desktop 2.2.0 has been announced, which aims to recreate the user interface of the IRIX Interactive Desktop (SGI Indigo Magic Desktop) using Linux technologies. The development is being carried out under an agreement with SGI, allowing for the complete recreation of all IRIX Interactive Desktop features for the Linux platform. Installation instructions have been prepared for Ubuntu, RHEL, Debian, Manjaro, and Arch Linux. <\/p>\n
The source code is only partially published. Some components contain a mix of proprietary code (as per the terms of the agreement with SGI) and code under various open licenses. Such components are developed in private repositories and are available upon special request. At the same time, work is underway to open all source texts, rewrite the remaining proprietary code, and transition the project to a community-controlled development model. All new code and rewritten old code are published under the BSD license. <\/p>\n
IRIX Interactive Desktop was delivered on SGI-produced graphic workstations equipped with the IRIX operating system. The peak popularity of such systems occurred in the late 1990s, and production continued until 2006. The shell edition for Linux is implemented on top of the 5dwm window manager (based on OpenMotif) and SGI-Motif libraries. The project uses a modular architecture employing microservices for the separate execution of desktop components. It includes systems for centralized monitoring (MaXXmonitor) and configuration management. <\/p>\n
Rendering and visual effects are implemented using OpenGL. To enhance performance and reduce CPU load, multi-threaded processing of operations is employed, with computation tasks offloaded to the GPU. The desktop is independent of screen resolution and utilizes vector icons. Support for extending the desktop across multiple monitors, HiDPI, UTF-8, and FreeType fonts is provided. The file manager used is ROX-Filer (optionally pcmanfm, as well as a proprietary file manager, which is still under development).
