The developers of the Serpent OS distribution have announced a rebranding of the project to AerynOS. They plan to complete the migration of infrastructure to the new name by March 17. It is noted that the name Serpent OS was chosen in haste without considering that the term 'serpent' is perceived negatively by some people (like the serpent tempter, a vengeful person). The developers have received many complaints regarding the unfortunate name choice, so it has been decided to take advantage of the moment while the project is still in the alpha testing phase and change the name. <\/p>\n
The Serpent OS project is presented as the next stage in the evolution of Linux distributions. It is being developed by the original team behind the Solus distribution, which includes Ikey Doherty \u2014 creator of Solus, and Joshua Strobl \u2014 lead developer of the Budgie desktop environment. The distribution uses a custom package manager called moss with its own package format, Stone, and tools for system state management. To save disk space when storing multiple package versions, deduplication based on hard links is employed. <\/p>\n
Updates are performed in an atomic mode, replacing the contents of the \/usr partition. In case of a failure during the installation of an update, the system rolls back to the previous working state. With the exception of the kernel and some system components, changes are applied on the fly, without requiring a reboot. Most packages, including the Linux kernel, are built using the Clang compiler. The project is also developing the Lichen installer, the boulder build system, control panel<\/a> summit, the blsforme boot manager, and the moss-container system. <\/p>\n
