Lubo\u0161 Kocman, the release manager for openSUSE, announced that SUSE is considering discontinuing support for BIOS boot, which would render SUSE and openSUSE distributions unusable on systems without UEFI support. The decision to stop BIOS support is based on the fact that starting with SLES 16 and openSUSE Leap 16, package builds will be targeted at the x86-64-v2 architecture, which includes support for SSE3, SSE4_2, SSSE3, POPCNT, LAHF-SAHF, and CMPXCHG16B extensions. <\/p>\n

Developers doubt that there is hardware in common use with the x86-64-v2 architecture that does not support UEFI.
