The release of the interactive command shell fish 4.0.0 (friendly interactive shell) has taken place, aimed at creating a more user-friendly alternative to bash and zsh. Fish supports features such as syntax highlighting with automatic error detection, input suggestions based on past operations, command and option autocompletion using their descriptions in man pages, comfortable out-of-the-box usability without the need for additional configuration, a simplified scripting language, clipboard support, and history search tools. The project's code is distributed under the GPLv2 license. Precompiled packages are available for Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, and openSUSE. <\/p>\n

The new branch is notable for the complete translation of the codebase from C++ to Rust. It is noted that the move to Rust has solved multithreading issues, improved memory safety, made the project more appealing to new developers, and utilized modern tooling that detects errors at compile-time. The work on rewriting fish in Rust took two years. More than 200 developers participated in the creation of release 4.0.
