The developers of the Arch Linux distribution have announced the replacement of Redis database packages in the «extra» repository with Valkey database packages due to Redis transitioning to a proprietary license. Valkey is a fork of Redis that continues to use the BSD license and is maintained by the Linux Foundation with the involvement of former Redis maintainers and companies like Amazon, Google, Oracle, Ericsson, and Snap. Valkey is already supplied instead of Redis in Debian 13, Ubuntu 24.10, Fedora 41, RHEL 10, Azure Linux 3, and Alpine 3.20 distributions. <\/p>\n
Starting from version 7.4, Redis DBMS transitioned to using RSALv2 (Redis Source Available License v2) and SSPLv1 (Server Side Public License v1), which discriminates against certain categories of users, preventing it from being considered open or free. Both licenses are similar in their objectives, with the main difference being that the SSPL license is based on the copyleft AGPLv3 license, while the RSAL license is based on the permissive BSD license. The RSAL license allows for the use, modification, distribution, and integration of code into applications, except when those applications are commercial or used to provide managed paid services. The SSPL license additionally requires the delivery under the same license not only of the application code but also of the source texts of all components involved in providing the cloud service. <\/p>\n
In Arch Linux, the «redis» package will remain in the «extra» repository for about two more weeks, after which it will be moved to the AUR (Arch User Repository), where the packages are maintained by third-party enthusiasts and are not officially supported. After its removal from the «extra» repository, Arch Linux developers do not intend to release updates for the redis package in AUR. For some time, the redis package in AUR will have an outdated status, after which it will be removed.
