In the iVentoy toolkit used for network booting and installation of arbitrary operating systems, suspicious activity has been detected. During the network boot of Windows OS, the toolkit substituted the binary driver httpdisk.sys into the system and installed its self-signed certificate into the system's root certificate store, which is used for signing the driver with a digital signature. Out of 70 antivirus packages that scanned the file httpdisk.sys, 31 issued a warning about the presence of malware. <\/p>\n

Such activity was perceived as a potential attempt to promote a backdoor and raised concerns about trust in the open-source Ventoy project. The situation was aggravated by the fact that last year, after the backdoor incident in the XZ project, the community had already raised alerts about the delivery of suspicious blobs in the source tree of Ventoy. <\/p>\n

Developers from NixOS suggested replacing Ventoy in the nixpkgs repository with the fork fnr1r (glim can also be considered as an alternative). The projects Ventoy and iVentoy are developed by the same author and have similar purposes. The difference is that Ventoy is fully open and aims at booting operating systems from USB drives, while iVentoy is only partially open and is intended for network booting using PXE technology. <\/p>\n

The author of the Ventoy and iVentoy projects joined the discussion regarding the issue and clarified that the code for the httpdisk.sys driver is open, and that the driver is intended for mounting disk images over the network in Windows via the HTTP protocol, which is utilized in iVentoy for obtaining Windows installation data. server<\/a> The substitution of drivers and scripts into the system post-boot is documented behavior. <\/p>\n

The private certificate used to sign this driver has been added to the root certificate store to allow the driver to load bypassing the digital signature verification applied in Windows. The certificate was only utilized in the one-time WinPE (Windows Preinstallation Environment) created in memory. No changes were made to the stationary installations of Windows on the disk. It has been announced that in the next release of iVentoy, the substitution of its own certificate will be discontinued, as the driver loading will use WinPE in test mode. <\/p>\n

Regarding the delivery of blobs (1, 2, 3) in Ventoy, the developer stated that these binary files are directly obtained from other open projects and Ventoy uses them without modifications. The ready executable files are used in the process of configuring bootable systems. As an alternative, it is suggested not to use pre-built assemblies, but to build them for Ventoy releases independently using GitHub CI.
