The Planka project, offering a self-hosted Kanban board service for team collaboration and task tracking, has switched to a proprietary license. Initially, the project used the Expat\/MIT license, transitioned to the AGPLv3 license in 2023, and now employs the proprietary 'Fair Use License' based on the 'Sustainable Use License'. The license change was made in the second candidate release of Planka 2.0, meaning that the 2.0 branch will be proprietary. <\/p>\n

The project author considers the discussion about the license change to be closed. Developers assure that 'for most users of the community version of the product, nothing will change', while downplaying the fact that the new license is not approved by the OSI and the Free Software Foundation, as it does not meet the definition of Open Source and the criteria for Free Software. <\/p>\n

The Fair Use License permits use and modification of the source code only for personal use, during learning, or to support internal processes within a company. Using the codebase to create paid products or services offered to third parties (for example, providing access to other legal entities to a deployed instance of Planka) is prohibited without purchasing a separate commercial license. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, for over two years (since the Planka project transitioned to the AGPLv3 license), a fork called 4gaBoards has been actively developed, continuing to use the Expat\/MIT license. The fork implements a number of new features not available in Planka, including: enhanced interface customization options (column collapsing, list view); tools for integration with external services (including authentication methods and synchronization); a sidebar for navigating between projects and boards; and board templates.
