As part of the X11Libre project, development has begun on a fork of the X.org Server aimed at cleaning up the codebase and continuing active development of X.org's functionality. The project was initiated by Enrico Weigelt, maintainer of the AMD FCH GPIO and VIRTIO GPIO drivers in the Linux kernel, maintainer of Xnest, and an active developer of Xorg. In the project announcement, Enrico noted that the freedesktop.org project is not independent and is controlled by Red Hat, which, in his opinion, deliberately hinders the development of the X server and attempts to bury the X11 project (Enrico has previously faced criticism from Linus Torvalds for his inclination toward conspiracy theories). <\/p>\n
Following actions related to the creation of the fork and attempts to draw attention to the revival of work on the X server, Karol Herbst (an employee of Red Hat and an advocate for inclusivity in the community) blocked Enrico's access to the freedesktop.org GitLab infrastructure, deleted his repositories, and closed all submitted requests for changes. In response, Enrico invited anyone interested to join the development of X11Libre. According to Enrico, the community has an interest in continuing the development of X.org, and during the artificial delay in development, a large number of unaccepted changes and improvements have accumulated in the X.org project. <\/p>\n
The first release of the fork is scheduled for publication in the coming days. The X11Libre project will be completely independent, not affiliated with any corporations or activists, and free from any discriminatory policies such as \"DEI\" (diversity, equity, and inclusion).
