After six months of development, the release of FreeBSD 14.3 has been finalized. Installation images are prepared for architectures amd64, i386, powerpc, powerpc64, powerpc64le, powerpcspe, armv7, aarch64, and riscv64. Additional builds for virtualization systems (QCOW2, VHD, VMDK, raw) and cloud environments such as Amazon EC2, Google Compute Engine, and Vagrant have also been prepared. <\/p>\n
The next FreeBSD 14.4 release is scheduled for March 2026. Support for the current FreeBSD 14.3 release will continue until June 30, 2026, while the previous FreeBSD 14.2 release will be supported until September 30, 2025. Overall, the FreeBSD 14 branch will be maintained until November 30, 2028, and the FreeBSD 13.x branch until April 30, 2026. The first release of the next major branch, FreeBSD 15, which will discontinue support for 32-bit architectures (except for armv7 and COMPAT_FREEBSD32 mode), is scheduled for December 2025. <\/p>\n
Main changes in FreeBSD 14.3: <\/p>\n

Support for Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) and Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) standards has been implemented in the LinuxKPI layer, used to run Linux drivers in FreeBSD, as well as offloading encryption operations to network adapters. These capabilities are utilized in the iwlwifi driver, based on the code of the same driver from the Linux kernel and supporting Intel wireless chips used in modern laptops. The iwlwififw firmware for the Intel iwlwifi driver has been removed from the base system in favor of installation from ports using the fwget utility.\n
The rtw88 driver for Realtek wireless chips with 802.11n\/ac support (RTL8723DE, RTL8821CE, RTL8822*) has been brought to a working state and is free from memory leaks, also using Linux code via LinuxKPI. <\/p>\n
Container images in OCI format have begun to be published in the Docker and GitHub repositories.\n
PCIe board hot-plug support has been added for ARM64 systems.\n
Support for parameters to bind policies to jail environments has been added in the MAC (Mandatory Access Control) API.\n
A setcred system call has been added for atomic changes of a process's credentials, such as euid, ruid, groups, and access control labels. A utility called mdo, similar to the su utility, has been prepared for running commands under a different user, using the mac_do kernel module and the setcred system call instead of setuid.\n
In the mac_do module, which allows policies that enable non-privileged users to change process credentials, the application of a single rule to multiple users and groups is permitted.\n
Support has been added for binding sysctl execution to a specified jail environment, allowing the parent environment to view and change kernel state in the child jail. Flags have been added to the sysctl utility to filter variables related to jail and vnet. For example, to set the net.fibs parameter in a jail named 'foo', you can now execute 'sysctl -j foo net.fibs=2'.\n
The ip6addrctl utility has added the '-j' option to apply settings bound to the specified jail environment, simplifying address management in the virtual network stack within the jail.\n
The pf packet filter has added the 'net.pf.default_to_drop' parameter to enable packet dropping mode by default. The value can be set in relation to virtual network stacks (vnet) within the jail.\n
Changing sysctl parameters of the virtual network stack (vnet) from the initial boot loader is allowed.\n
Dynamic allocation of virtual channels (vchan) for recording and playback of sound has been implemented in the sound subsystem as needed.\n
The mpi3mr driver for Broadcom MPIMR 3.0 IT\/IR SAS PCIe controllers has been updated and activated in the base kernel (GENERIC).\n
The rtw88 and rtw89 drivers for wireless adapters based on Realtek chips have been synchronized with the Linux kernel 6.14.\n
Support for Intel 9260\/9560 Bluetooth adapters has been added to the iwmbtfw firmware and the iwmbt-firmware port.\n
Support for Ethernet controllers in the ix (Intel), igc (Intel), and bnxt (Broadcom) drivers has been expanded.\n
Improved hot-plug support for devices in AWS EC2 cloud environments based on x86 and arm64 ('Graviton') architectures.\n
The logic for handling the '-U' flag in the ps utility has been changed; it now filters processes by RUID (Real User ID) instead of EUID (Effective User ID), as defined in the POSIX specification.\n
In the grep utility, following symbolic links during recursive searches has been disabled by default.\n
A new FreeBSD-kmods repository has been added to the pkg package manager settings (\/etc\/pkg\/FreeBSD.conf), containing kernel modules compiled for the 14.3-RELEASE.\n
The open key database \/etc\/publickey, tied to the DES algorithm, has been deprecated.\n
A warning about the removal of the gvinum logical volume manager has been added in the FreeBSD 15 branch. Gvinum development stopped around 15 years ago, with several known issues in the code that have not been addressed. It is recommended to use gconcat, gmirror, gstripe, graid, or zfs instead of gvinum.\n
A warning about the upcoming removal of the syscons console driver, which is incompatible with UEFI, does not support UTF-8, and still uses the global kernel lock, has been added. It has not yet been determined in which release support for syscons will be discontinued, but the kernel's removal of the global lock is expected in FreeBSD 16. <\/ul>\n
